IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat.
IRC is a service running on a server. Being a server it 'LISTENS' on a particular 'PORT' number.
IRC usually runs on Port 6667. But before you can connect to a 'SERVER' you will need a 'CLIENT'.
Download Mirc
Install The Mirc Client
Now you will need to start and configure the 'irc client' to connect to the 'irc server'.
Mirc requires you to enter a name,nickname,etc...
Once you've done that you can connect to my server with a few simple commands.
Type /server irc.neuroticnetworks.com
Type /join #neuroticnetworks
CONGRATULATIONS!, You're on IRC. You should see at least a few names in the 'nicklist' over on the righthand side of the client, you can talk publicly by typing into the channel or double click one of these names to send a private message. IRC is a chaotic place with no real rules, so be careful not to offend and don't be offended too easily. In terms of politeness and social graces, IRC can be like hanging out in the rough part of town. So don't be a wuss and don't pick a fight you can't win or you may find out just what kind of damage can be incurred by the wrath of some random dweeb whose had one too many redbulls and an itchy botnet finger.
